How To Practice Self Care

Writer: Julie Palmer, APJulie Palmer, AP

When we think of wellness and health, our mind routinely thinks nutrition, fitness, supplements, yoga, meditation, etc. We all want to feel happier and more energized, but daily life stresses can get in our way. Making ourselves a priority can become last on our list of to do’s and suddenly we become farther away from nurturing our mind, body, and soul. We ultimately want to practice self-care so that we feel more connected to ourselves and the world around us. This can be done through activities that we practice on a daily basis that will help us reduce stress in your life. There are five common areas of self-care which are, physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, and emotional. Let’s talk about some ways that you can practice self-care in your everyday life. Breaking it down between physical self-care, mental self-care, and emotional self-care. Physical self-care is moving your body and using energy. Physical self-care ideas can be anything from going for a run, walking, hiking, swimming, playing with a pet, dancing, gardening, and cycling. Mental self-care is great for brain health and some ideas for mental self-care include; drawing, turning off your phone, learning a new skill, reading a book, coloring, crossword puzzles, and making crafts. Emotional self-care is what we use to nurture our inner feelings. Emotional self-care includes meditation, talking with a friend, lighting a candle, keeping a journal, listening to your favorite music, going on a date, and practicing yoga. These are a few ideas to get you started. What do you do to practice self care?
